One of the most important things you can do is learn to listen. To truly listen. In a heartfelt and authentic way. Listening to another is one of the greatest gifts you can give them.
Stop worrying about what you are going to say next. Stop trying to give good advice. You will be surprised at the transformative effects of simply listening, both for the one you are listening to and also for you.
First, listen to their words. Then listen to what is being said beyond their words. Finally, listen to their heart, and it will speak to you the truth of their existence. Deepen your listening so you can hear the Soul of others.
As I was working with my collaborator on an upcoming retreat we are doing in Puerto Rico (check it out here!), Gretchen reminded me how powerful the piece on listening was for the participants of our last workshop. It is one of the simplest yet foundational elements of the work I do. So we are weaving the listening piece throughout our retreat, and that inspired me to write about it here.
How does someone else know that you are listening to them? Surely, we have all been “listening” to someone while our mind wandered elsewhere. They don’t know if you are truly receiving what they are speaking or simply being quiet, nodding along, while you think of other things.
Like most important spiritual tools, it is simple in its instructions, but endless in its learning.
I’ll share a couple of approaches, both for listening inwardly as well as listening to others.
