I was recently speaking to my long time friend, Mark Harradine, discussing a free event we are going to be giving this week (you can signup here). I asked him how he was doing, and he said “you know…chop wood, carry water.” That’s from a Zen saying: Before enlightenment: chop wood, carry water. After enlightenment: chop wood, carry water.

I was like, “That’s it! Let’s use that. We can call it Before Enlightenment.”

The concept is really simple and fits perfectly with our approach of practical spirituality: enlightenment isn’t about what you do, it’s about the consciousness you have when you are doing it. Two people may be doing the exact same thing in this world, and one is enlightened and the other isn’t.

I’ve spent many, many…many…years dedicated to the lifting of my consciousness and traveling the spiritual realms in greater awareness. Guess what? I still have my wood to chop and water to carry, so to speak. I still have problems. Life doesn’t always seem so easy. This world can seem like a tough town to live in.

Over the years, I have been exposed to a multitude of tools and techniques to assist me in approaching those problems in ways that are aligned with my spiritual focus. I spent almost everyday for 17 years with my spiritual teacher, John-Roger. I have probably forgotten more esoteric experiences and spiritual information than most people will know this lifetime!

What’s funny is that I’ll often remember a tool I used years ago when I’m working directly with someone and they bring a problem to me. That’s often what triggers my memory of the right tool to assist them.

I’ll give you a couple techniques at the end of this that I learned from my time with John-Roger.

Some techniques over the years have stood the test of time and become my go-to tools, but most techniques are here one day and gone the next.

The thing is, most of the tools and techniques you will use along your spiritual journey are disposable. Sometimes they are even single use. They may have been really effective and helpful for you for that one problem you were dealing with. In fact, if they really work, and you get to the next step of your spiritual awareness, then you don’t need them anymore, and they were an amazing tool for you.

But what do we do with all these disposable, single use spiritual tools and techniques? We don’t want to be wasteful.

The good news is that they are recyclable!

How do you recycle them when you no longer need them?
