Once you recognize that this level is a classroom, and every experience is for your upliftment, learning, and growth, you can begin to glimpse at the magnificent perfection that is the totality of existence. It is on this basis that acceptance is the first law of Spirit. If you want understanding, you must start with acceptance.

Most of us don’t live our day to day lives in the awareness of ultimate realities. We are busy handling the minutiae of living.
When you take the time to go inward in spiritual exercises, you have the opportunity to expand your awareness into ultimates. As you zoom out from a limited perspective to an unconditional view, you have an opportunity to know the perfection in all things. In that awareness, it is easy to accept because you see clearly. It is easy to be filled with loving, because that is the nature of higher consciousness. You move into natural knowing of which compassionate understanding is a byproduct.
As I said before, most of the time you are probably not in that awareness. And even when doing meditation and spiritual exercises, it can take a moment or take years of consistent practice to bring back memory of that higher awareness.
So then, acceptance becomes a method in this classroom to open your consciousness and come into greater understanding and cooperation with your life path. Does that mean that you have to accept yourself just as you are? Yes. Does that mean you have to accept the corruption you see in your government? Yup. Does that mean you have to accept the wars? Indeed. No one said this was easy. You don’t have to like what is happening, you don’t have to support it, but you accept that it is happening.
What if you don’t accept it? That’s fine. It is still going to happen, but now you will be in a state of denial or resistance to what is happening. Reality will steam roll over your opinions every time. As the saying goes: your karma ran over your dogma.
Once you accept what is so, you open yourself to understanding. At times, you may actually see the karma (the lesson or balancing action). Just seeing the bigger picture can take a big weight off of your shoulders. You can let go, knowing that it truly is perfect. Other times, the understanding may manifest as an inner knowing of the rightness of what is taking place, even when it is difficult or unpleasant.
Once you have acceptance and understanding, then you can cooperate with what is taking place. To cooperate doesn’t mean you have to participate (with a war for instance). In your understanding you can choose to do something else, or to offer compassion to those affected. Compassion is made up of the word com- which means with, and passion which means suffering. So to have compassion is to be with those who suffer.
You could skip all of the steps and just move to compassion and loving, but sometimes it’s necessary to take the steps in order to get to the same destination.
