“You just lack vision.” Said my friend and spiritual teacher, John-Roger (or J-R as we called him).
I had been feeling uninspired working in the business I had co-founded and told him so, but his response only made me more bothered.
What does he mean, I lack vision?
J-R often had a way of telling me things I didn’t like. You’ve got a good teacher if they tell you the truth even when it disturbs you. When you hear the truth, no matter how uncomfortable, there’s no hiding from it.
You can argue for your position but something inside of you knows it’s true.

If you argued against the truth with J-R, he would say you were “arguing for your limitations.” He wouldn’t engage in the argument. He would simply let you “win.”
And the prize for winning? You got to keep your limitations, or perhaps it’s more appropriate to say, your limitations kept you.
Through the years, that conversation with J-R has continued to bounce around my head. It’s like a tiny pebble in my shoe causing irritation that isn’t quite worth taking my shoe off to get it out. I like that it is there, because it reminds me to keep growing.
To this day, when I’m having challenges in my work and business life, I remember those words and ask myself:
